Top Silicon Valley Community College Launches Campaign to Increase Number of Latino and Low-Income Students With STEM Degrees

College of San Mateo partners with student support pioneer InsideTrack to provide success coaching to STEM students

SAN MATEO, CALIF. (NOVEMBER 14, 2017) — Student success experts InsideTrack and the College of San Mateo (CSM), a leading San Francisco Bay Area community college, today announced the launch of a new program to increase the number of Latino and low-income students graduating with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) degrees. Over the next three years, the two organizations will partner to provide students with access to InsideTrack’s expert coaches and innovative uCoach® platform, which are proven to help students persist and graduate.

The program is funded by a Title III Hispanic-Serving Institutions STEM grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Its focus on STEM students is part of a broader effort across Silicon Valley by the education, tech, and philanthropic communities to close achievement gaps among  Latino and low-income students in STEM disciplines and to connect them with meaningful STEM careers.

Situated in the San Mateo Hills, CSM serves a diverse student body of approximately 10,000 day, evening, and weekend students from across the Bay Area. It offers a variety of STEM courses in a range of subjects such as Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Programming, and Web and Mobile Application Development.

InsideTrack success coaches will provide one-to-one, personalized coaching to 150 CSM students, to support them in defining their long-term goals and establishing plans to successfully graduate with a STEM degree. Coaches will also help learners develop crucial “soft” skills needed for academic and career success, such as time management. The coaching will be supported by InsideTrack’s uCoach technology and analytics platform, which enables coaches and students to engage across multiple communication channels and generates insights for CSM staff and administrators to support internal improvement initiatives.

“In the valley and throughout our region, there is growing demand for college graduates with STEM credentials, creating opportunities for well-paying jobs with high potential for career advancement,” said José Rocha, director of METaS, the Hispanic-Serving Institution – STEM grant at College of San Mateo. “With the economic opportunity afforded through the growth in STEM fields, it is imperative that we help students from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly Latino and low-income students, succeed in STEM programs. Our partnership with InsideTrack enables us to provide students with the personalized support needed to chart a path to success, overcome obstacles, and gain access to these thriving professions.”

Since 2001, InsideTrack’s coaching methodology, technology, and tools have been proven to increase student persistence and completion in hundreds of randomized control trials and through its work with more than 1.5 million students.  The organization currently supports more than 1,600 programs nationwide, including many at Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black College and Universities, and Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions.

“As a organization with deep roots in the Bay Area and a mission to unlock human potential, we are excited to be partnering with the College of San Mateo on this innovative program,” said Kai Drekmeier, president and founder of InsideTrack. “CSM is clearly committed to advancing equity and opportunity by expanding their students’ access to rewarding careers in rapidly growing STEM fields.”
