Increasing Retention Of Veterans In Higher Education

Many schools are seeking to remedy common obstacles to veteran student success in college by becoming military friendly in a variety of ways. While most schools have staffed certifying officials to process GI Bill benefits, and are establishing student veteran centers, organizations and veteran-friendly financial policies, awareness of the challenges veterans face must permeate the entire institution.

Veterans get student loan forgiveness in return for community service

Leave No Veteran Behind (LVNB) is a privately-funded, non-profit organization that helps Veterans repay student loans that do not fall under the auspices of the GI Bill. LVNB founders Roy Brown Sartin and Eli Williamson both struggled with student loans while they were deployed in Iraq and realized many other Veterans and active soldiers faced similar issues. To date, LVNB has distributed around a quarter of a million dollars to Veterans, and in return they perform community service projects which create a connection to the community that Sartin says is “vital” for returning Veterans.

Local Veteran Returns to School More Than 40 Years Later

Larry Johnson knows how difficult it is to obtain a college degree after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Johnson, a local Vietnam War veteran here in Orting, has returned to school more than forty years later and is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree in May of next year. Johnson was injured by a mortar in Vietnam while he served, and returned home struggling to keep his health in shape. “I tried to go to college, but just couldn’t do the same work,” Johnson said.
