Coach Knows Best

The outsourcing of student coaching and advising appears to be less controversial than it was when InsideTrack, a private company that provides coaches via phone, arrived on the scene in 2001.
For one thing, colleges are feeling plenty of pressure to step up their game in getting students to graduation. That probably makes it harder to criticize their use of outside help on coaching. And some college leaders argue that InsideTrack’s brand of advising is simply better than what they can do in-house.

For Veterans, Unmet Goals

ORLANDO – The disparity between college administrators’ desire to help student veterans succeed and their ability to do that is becoming more apparent as the issue gains increased attention.
According to the Department of Defense, 325,000 active duty service members were enrolled in college courses in 2011. Institutions expect that number will continue to rise as more soldiers returning from Afghanistan utilize their Post-9/11 GI Bill federal tuition benefits, for which 2 million veterans are eligible.

HLC and SACS join WASC in adding retention and completion to accreditation criteria

Last week, the presidents of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC-NCACS) outlined changes to their accreditation processes at the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) fall meeting. Both organizations highlighted the increased importance they will place on universities’ efforts to improve student retention and completion rates.
