Philip DiSalvio, Ed.D.
Dean, University College
University of Massachusetts Boston
It can be argued that remaking a continuing education division into a degree-granting academic unit might sharpen the institution’s strategic focus, align it with market trends, and meet the pressures of a changing competitive environment. In considering a similar reorganizational strategy, a number of lessons might be drawn from an organization that employed such a strategy.
While this reorganizational strategy should be seen in the context of an ongoing process, four major “lesson areas” emerged. Each of these lesson areas suggested specific actions that could contribute to… Continue reading

Managing the Organizational Challenges and Leveraging the Opportunities in a Reconstituted Unit

Philip DiSalvio, Ed.D.
Dean
University College
University of Massachusetts Boston
Managing the organizational challenges that come with the reconstitution of a continuing education division into a degree-granting academic unit is essential.
A long-standing and successful division of a continuing education unit that has been reconstituted into an academic unit will not be regarded as either a natural step in its evolution or inevitable by all stakeholders. Concerns that enrollments might be diverted from various discipline-based colleges to the “new” college or that the unit’s new power to create its own degree programs might create intra-campus competition… Continue reading
State authorization: Seeing the forest and the trees of regulatory compliance
Reed Scull
Associate Dean of Outreach
University of Wyoming
Co-written with Diane Johnson, Academic Dean, New Charter University
For many of us in distance and continuing education, there was a time when it was possible to be blissfully unaware of the regulatory efforts of federal and state policymakers. But that time has surely passed. Institutions were awakened to the existence of state statutes governing distance education with the October 2010 release of the United State Department of Education (USDOE) administrative regulation. The USDOE mandate would compel educational providers to be authorized to operate in the states where… Continue reading

Postsecondary Education Landscape
Cathy Sandeen
Ph.D, MBA
Dean, UCLA Extension
There’s a shift in the higher education landscape. Or maybe it’s an expansion. If we look at the entire landscape of postsecondary education—and not only traditional degrees—the picture is big, dynamic, and evolving.
But most importantly, I believe, the system is inclusive. The new postsecondary landscape offers multiple entry points, many formats, recognition for different forms of learning, and the ability to compound learning over time. My first try with the following chart attempts to capture this environment.

The purple colored boxes represent what we have traditionally… Continue reading
