Eight Things Colleges Should be Doing For Military Spouses
By Maria Montalvo
When Jesica Rasmussen began looking into her university options three years ago, she had more on her mind than a typical college freshman. As the wife of an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, Rasmussen could expect many moves in her future. She could expect deployments when her husband was away for long periods of time, leaving her alone to care for their four children. Jill hits the “send” button, firing off the last of the inquiry emails to her short-list of online graduate programs. She waits eagerly for the responses as she gets ready to leave the office. For Veterans, Unmet Goals
By Allie Grasgreen
ORLANDO – The disparity between college administrators’ desire to help student veterans succeed and their ability to do that is becoming more apparent as the issue gains increased attention.

Institutions expect that number will continue to rise as more soldiers returning from Afghanistan utilize their Post-9/11 GI Bill federal tuition benefits, for which 2 million veterans are eligible.
As a result, more colleges are starting up student veterans’ centers or hiring staff specifically to serve this demographic, but… Continue reading

In a survey of 239 institutions, a majority said they did not collect retention or completion rates. Nearly three-quarters did not do so for active-duty military students, while about two-thirds did not do so for veterans. The research was conducted jointly by NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and InsideTrack, a company that provides success coaching for students.
The groups’ seven-page report on the survey findings, released on Thursday, suggests that without… Continue reading
