National Student ClearinghouseThis morning, I started reviewing the latest Signature Report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, “Transfer & Mobility: A National View of Pre-Degree Student Movement in Postsecondary Institutions.” While I have yet to digest the entire report, I did find two items quite interesting:

1) Nearly half of 4-year student transfers are “reverse transfers” to 2-year programs

2) 4-year student transfers are lower, but still significant in Year 1 and Years 3+

The following is a Q&A conducted with University Professional and Continuing Education Chief Executive Officer Robert Hansen. Today, decisions about new investments and cuts at universities are often highly political, driven by the interests of various stakeholders, including faculty, alumni, athletics, and administration. Too often, what’s missing is a focus on measurement… Continue reading

The federal government lacks effective tools to change this contradictory financial context because penalizing colleges by threatening to withhold student aid harms only students. That leaves “jawboning” as the main (and ineffectual) recourse.… Continue reading

The Need for Focus on Adult Student Success

Alan Tripp

Our notion of the “traditional college student” needs to change. By the end of this decade, 46 percent or nearly half of all students in higher education will be over the age of 25.  According to government statistics, more than 4.6 million college students were taking at least one online course at the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.

As students get older and increasingly seek online or hybrid programs, higher education should focus on developing programs that are geared to this student population’s needs, as well as providing the… Continue reading
