New Signature Report Identifies Transfer and Mobility Patterns of First-Time Students
Dave Jarrat
Director of University Marketing
InsideTrack
This morning, I started reviewing the latest Signature Report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, “Transfer & Mobility: A National View of Pre-Degree Student Movement in Postsecondary Institutions.” While I have yet to digest the entire report, I did find two items quite interesting:
1) Nearly half of 4-year student transfers are “reverse transfers” to 2-year programs

2) 4-year student transfers are lower, but still significant in Year 1 and Years 3+

Positioning For Strength In Times Of Institutional Change
Robert Hansen
Chief Executive Officer
The University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA)
The following is a Q&A conducted with University Professional and Continuing Education Chief Executive Officer Robert Hansen. In this interview, Hansen discusses the positioning of Continuing Education units as the education industry undergoes its transformation. Drawing on his experience at the helm of UPCEA and his time as a chief continuing education officer at two institutions, Hansen argues that Continuing Education units must lead discussions on their institution’s future and utilize their business-mindedness to improve the… Continue reading
Taking Up the Challenge
President Obama put the rising cost of a college degree in the national spotlight during his State of the Union address January 24. Colleges and universities can take up the president’s challenge to keep tuition costs down by investing in programs, teaching methodologies, services, and support that are proven through a rigorous controlled study to have a positive impact on student outcomes.
Today, decisions about new investments and cuts at universities are often highly political, driven by the interests of various stakeholders, including faculty, alumni, athletics, and administration. Too often, what’s missing is a focus on measurement… Continue reading
National Goals for College Education Depend on the States
Consider this dilemma: The Obama administration, the Lumina Foundation, and numerous state governors have set goals for increasing sharply the proportion of college graduates (or at least the proportion of people with some form of postsecondary training) by 2020-25, while for more than a decade, state-government support for higher education has been diminishing, leading to ever-higher tuition charges and escalating student debt.
The federal government lacks effective tools to change this contradictory financial context because penalizing colleges by threatening to withhold student aid harms only students. That leaves “jawboning” as the main (and ineffectual) recourse.… Continue reading
The Need for Focus on Adult Student Success
Alan Tripp
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
InsideTrack
Our notion of the “traditional college student” needs to change. By the end of this decade, 46 percent or nearly half of all students in higher education will be over the age of 25. According to government statistics, more than 4.6 million college students were taking at least one online course at the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.
As students get older and increasingly seek online or hybrid programs, higher education should focus on developing programs that are geared to this student population’s needs, as well as providing the… Continue reading
